UDM Leader Accuses WFP Of Supplying Rotten Rice

The Acting Chairman of the All Political Parties Association (APPA) and leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Mohamed Bangura has accused the World Food Program (WFP) of supplying rotten and expired food items to quarantined homes across the country.
He made this accusation on Wednesday 5th November, 2014 at the press conference organized at the headquarters of the Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party (SLPP) on Wallace Johnson Street, Freetown on APPA’s preliminary findings on the Ebola Virus Disease.
Mr. Mohamed Bangura revealed that the fact finding mission was a national service to help Government curb the spread of the virus and accused WFP of supplying expired and rotten food items to quarantined homes and communities unfit for human consumption and urged Government to address the issue.

He further queried, “if aid agencies want to help, why can’t they buy local products that will benefit the people and the economy? The expired rice will kill people after the Ebola epidemic.”
According to Mr. Bangura, people in quarantined homes visited condemned the rice supplied them and asserted that the anomaly has the tendency to ignite social unrest as people feel embarrassed and dejected with the supply enlightening that the rice supplied by WFP is not a gift but purchased from funds donated by international organizations.
He further revealed that the people called them selfish politicians and appealed to Government to monitor the activities of aid agencies nationwide alleging that 60% of the funds donated by the international community go to expatriates.
He also revealed that people in quarantined homes visited in the Western Area disapproved the rice and palm oil supplied them claiming the latter is unsealed and that they alleged that it has been poisoned.
Mr. Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie, Secretary General of the SLPP said that they have traveled nationwide to sensitize the people about the outbreak as well as served as contact tracers and surveillance officers as their own contribution to end the pandemic.
He however called on the President to give the reason for the arrest of veteran journalist, Dr. David Tamba Baryoh articulating that in a state of emergency, Government is mandated to issue a warrant of arrest before arresting people adding that the Constitution also protects citizens and assured that the arrest of the journalist is being closely monitored.
