Son Cuts Mother’s Head off with Ax

A Pinellas County man is accused of decapitating his mother on New Year’s Eve with an ax.

Christian Jose Gomez, 23, admitted to killing his mother, Maria Suarez-Cassagne, 48, after deputies arrested him Wednesday, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

The murder occurred about 7:30 p.m. at the Oldsmar home the mother shared with her two sons.

Deputies said they received a call from Mario Gomez, Cassagne’s other son, saying that his brother had killed their mother.

“It’s just really sad because she’s wonderful,” said neighbor Carrie Rivera. “She’s really, really nice.”

Investigators said Christian Gomez attacked his mother with the ax in the garage, then put her head in a trash can in a small side yard.

He then tried to do the same with her body, but wasn’t able to, deputies said. He left, leaving his older brother, who’d been in a bedroom at the time of the murder, to find the gruesome scene.

“You could definitely see that he was traumatized, and he was just bending down and crying and talking to the police,” Rivera said.

When deputies arrived, Christian Gomez had already fled the home. Deputies set up a perimeter, and Gomez was spotted riding his bike several blocks away. A short foot pursuit began, ending with his arrest.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Gomez admitted to killing his mother and said he was upset that she had asked him to put some boxes away.

Gomez had a history of mental illness and had been planning to kill her for two days, the sheriff said.

“In a very calm, cool way he explained what he did, why he did it, what happened, and by talking to him you wouldn’t know he had any mental illness, he had any trouble at all. And you know that’s very scary,” Gualtieri said.

Gomez is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond in the Pinellas County Jail.
