A driver struck another vehicle in the township, then fled the scene and drove four miles on U.S. 1 with his hood up and over his windshield, according to police.

The accident occurred about 9:45 p.m. on April 3 when a 2002 gold Nissan was involved in a crash at U.S. 1 South and Sandhill Road, police said.

The driver fled the scene.

“He continued to drive south on Route 1 for four miles all the time while the hood of his vehicle was up in the air covering his windshield,” police said in a report.

David Mathenge, 43, of Bensalem, Pa., was later pulled over and arrested, police said.

“Mathenge had difficulty standing and slurred his words after being stopped,” police said in a report.

Mathenge was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to report an accident.

South Brunswick Officer Pete Santa spotted the vehicle driving with its hood up and made the arrest, police said.
He was released pending a court appearance.
