Many fans were expecting, and excited, that Love would sign tonight and we could put all the drama behind us regarding Love. Instead it looks like the Love free agency process will take some time as they are planning a meeting “this week.”

Love’s first season with the Cavs was an up and down one. The team struggled early in the season before destroying teams after some January trades set the team up well. Love’s numbers fell as he seemed frustrated by his role in the offense.

A terrible injury in Love’s first NBA Playoff series against the Boston Celtics finished his year with a dislocated shoulder.

Love has been consistent with his statements about next year. He has stated over and over again, including in a media session after his surgery, that he plans to return to Cleveland next year. These statements match those he stated as his introductory press conference.

The Lakers have a “hometown” advantage with Love. Love is actually from Portland but played his college ball at UCLA and has family ties to LA. The Lakers are looking to rebuild around D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle, along with likely Kove Bryant’s last year with the team.

The fit of Love and Randle is not perfect. Both are ground bound players who struggle defensively. Randle is more of an interior offensive player while Love has the ability to stretch the floor as well as play from the post.
