A recent attempted sexual assault on Detroit’s west side had similar circumstances to sexual assaults in the area, and police are looking into possible connections.

A press release was issued last week involving a man who approached a woman at 10:50 p.m. March 24 in the area of Livernois and West 7 Mile Road, as she was exiting her vehicle. Police say he fired a shot into the air and forced her back inside. He made her drive to another area and attempted to sexually assault her before she escaped without serious injury, according to Detroit police.

There’ve been five rapes in three incidents the past couple weeks in west and northwest Detroit. Police spokeswoman Jennifer Moreno said police aren’t saying how many they believe could be connected, but they’re investigating.

Police describe the suspect in the March 24 case as a black man age 25-40, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot, 275 pounds, stocky with a light complexion, clean shaven and wearing a black knit hat, black hoodie, black zippered mask, faded blue jeans and armed with a long-barrel revolver.

Rev. Malik Shabazz, who’s been working to increase crime awareness and help make neighborhoods safer through the Marcus Garvey Movement, was going door-to-door in the area of 7 Mile and Pennington with a group on Thursday, advising people to be aware of recent rapes and be careful.
