It wasn’t a devastating KO or an epic ending, but when it was over, Paulie Malignaggi told his hometown Brooklyn crowd that this was probably his last fight. The results another Garcia win, this time his first at 147, and a lackluster fight that Garcia dominated.
The fight was one-sided, and it was stopped in the 9th by the ref as cuts on the face of Malignaggi were a factor along with his inability to hurt Garcia.
The ref warned Paulie before the 9th stating, “I am not going to let you take much more, Paulie.”
He clearly was a man of his word stopping the fight in what some might say was too early, but it didn’t matter in the end. Malignaggi didn’t have the power or ability to hurt Garcia.
Garcia is now 30 with a doughnut, 30-0, and as he wins his first fight at 147, the road will only get tougher with the likes of Keith Thurman, who was ringside, perhaps his next opponent.
It is the end of the road for two time champ Malignaggi, and the start of Garcia’s road into 147.
